Funny horse names: A true or false quiz

It's the Grand National this weekend, which for the benefit of any readers who aren't from England, is the biggest horse race in England. I'm not a great fan of horse racing, but I do appreciate the amusing names that some owners have given their horses.

"Ha, ha, ha! You're called what?"
So with that in mind this week's blog post is a horse themed true or false quiz. Take a look at the following amusing horse names and see if you can guess whether they're real horses, or whether they're just silly names which I've made up!

1) Windsorlot

You would expect a horse named Windsorlot to win a lot, but sadly Windsorlot has failed to win any of its last 15 races.1 Perhaps it should be renamed Losesalot.

True or false?

2) Horsey McHorseface

There's a Boaty McBoatface, and a Hooty McOwlface, but you may be surprised to learn that there's also a Horsey McHorseface!

Horsey McHorseface raced several times in Australia and won a race at Cessnock back in 2017, so perhaps he could also have been called Winnie McWinface. Or perhaps even 'Whinny' McWinface.

True or false?

I don't know what this horse's name is, but if I had
to guess I'd say it was called Smiley McSmileface.

3) Grumpy McGrumpface

Horsey McHorseface isn't the only horse to be named after the naming formula originally made popular by Hooty McOwlface. There's also a presumably miserable horse named Grumpy McGrumpface.

Grumpy McGrumpface is based in Ireland, so sadly he never got to race against Horsey McHorseyface, which is a shame, as I would struggle to keep a straight face listening to the commentator...

"And with two furlongs to go, it's Horsey McHorseface leading from Grumpy McGrumpface..."

Unfortunately, Grumpy McGrumpface has failed to win any of its last 9 races1, so perhaps that's why he's so grumpy!

True or false?

4) Bollin Ace

On the face of it, Bollin Ace seems to be a perfectly normal name and not an amusing pun. That's until you realise that whoever named this horse is a fan of spaghetti (Bollin Ace = Bolognese).

But is it a real horse name, or have I just made it up?

True or false?

"I got the hooves like Jagger..."

5) Hooves Like Jagger

I'm sure it's fairly obvious, but Hooves Like Jagger is a pun based on the song title 'Moves Like Jagger' by Maroon 5. Perhaps it should spend more time racing and less time showing off its moves, because Hooves Like Jagger has failed to win any of its last 9 races.1

True or false?

6) Rocket Naan

Hooves Like Jagger isn't the only horse to take the inspiration for its name from a song. Rocket Naan is another such horse. Presumably the owner of Rocket Naan is a fan of the song Rocket Man by Elton John.

True or false?

7) Imajorblush

Magic horses hovering off the ground.
This horse reminds me of the old knock knock joke...

"Knock, knock."
"Who's there?"
"Major."
"Major who?"
"Major blush."

Perhaps the owner had that old knock knock joke in mind when they named their horse, or perhaps the horse doesn't even exist and I just made it up.

True or false?

8) Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch

I'm sure todays' horse racing commentators are pleased that this horse named after the famous Welsh village with the notoriously long name is no longer running, but back in the 80s, Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch must have caused many nightmares for horse racing commentators.

Presumably by the time the commentator had said Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch's name, the race would be over!

True or false?

9) Ahorsecalledwanda

Not a fish called Wanda, but a horse called Wanda. Actually, it's not even a horse called Wanda. It's a horse called 'Ahorsecalledwanda'.

True or false?

Fudge and a muffin.
(The snacks, not the horses).

10) Charles, Fudge, and Muffin

Finally, to round things off here's three horses for the price of one! Sadly, there isn't a horse called Charles Fudgemuffin. However, there are three individual horses called Charles, Fudge, and Muffin!

True or false?

Scroll down the page to discover which horse names were real horses, and which were fictitious horse names that I made up...

Proof.
Believe it or not, all of the horses apart from Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch were real horses! I'm sure horse racing commentators will be relieved to hear that!

On a final note, when I was writing this blog post I originally made up the name Horsey McHorseface, but by coincidence it turned out that Horsey McHorseFace was also a real horse!
