Silly tautologies (part 5)

Tautologies are just a fancy way of repeating the same thing twice. Which makes them quite a suitable subject for the Charles Fudgemuffin blog, because I often like the repeat the same theme twice (or even five times in some cases) in my blog posts.

This week is no exception, as I feature another round-up of silly tautologies.

Unfortunately, I didn't have any photos of a stupid idiot,
so I had to use this photo of a highly intelligent man instead.

1) Stupid idiot

This is a tautology that me and my friends used quite a lot when we were young. We would often call each other stupid idiots as an insult among friends.

However, it's another obvious tautology. It's safe to say, you don't get many intelligent idiots. Nor do you get many stupid geniuses. I think the fact that an idiot is stupid goes without saying.

So on reflection, what a bunch of stupid idiots we were to call each other stupid idiots!

Silly tautologies (part 4)

As I'm sure every knows, the dictionary defines a tautology as 'needless repetition of an idea or description, or an instance of unnecessary recurrence'.

From time to time on the Charles Fudgemuffin blog, I like to draw attention to silly tautologies, so as it's been a while since my last round-up of silly tautologies, this week's blog post features another selection of unnecessary repetitions!
"Bah! A belated warning!
If only it had been an advance warning!"

1) Advance warning

An 'advance' warning? I think it's fair to say that all warnings are given in advance! You don't warn someone after the event has already occurred!

Imagine the weather forecast saying, "I'm warning you now, take an umbrella when you go out yesterday, because it rained yesterday."

Silly tautologies (part 3)

Regular readers of the Charles Fudgemuffin blog will be aware that when a blog post gets several views I often like to 'listen to the market', and feature a follow-up blog post on the same theme.

Tautology = Needless repetition
My 'silly tautologies' blog posts have received quite a lot of page views, so with that in mind, this week's blog post is another collection of silly tautologies*.

* I'm sure everyone already knows, but just to clarify, a tautology is a needless repetition of a word or idea in an unnecessarily repetitive manner.

1) DC Comics

The 'DC' in DC Comics was originally short for Detective Comics, so the full name of DC Comics is Detective Comics Comics!

Silly tautologies

A friend of mine is a big fan of tautologies, or rather he's a big fan of pointing out when other people use tautologies, and I have to admit that until a few years ago I didn't know what a tautology was.

Movement of the people.
So for the benefit of anyone in a similar position, a tautology is when you use needless repetition of a word, idea or phrase in an unnecessarily repetitive way, or an unrequired duplicate manner.*

* That was a deliberate tautology.

Here are a few examples...

1) Mass exodus

There's no such thing as a small exodus. By definition, an exodus will always be massive. There's therefore no need to clarify that it's a mass exodus as that's already implied. A 'mass exodus' is therefore a simple example of a tautology.
