However, to test your powers at detecting prankery, one of the following 'pranks' is actually real and not a prank at all! It should be fairy obvious, but if you can't work it out, the answer is revealed at the bottom of today's blog post...
1) McDonalds Pickle Burger
I'm Gherkin It |
"Pickle lovers, it’s the news you’ve all been waiting for. We’re super stoked* to announce the launch of our brand new McPickle Burger. It’s time to tuck into juicy, flavoursome pickles layered between melted cheese, ketchup sauce and toasted sesame seed buns. It’s sure to be a treat for all your senses."
* 'Stoked' is an Australian word for excited.
The announcement was accompanied by an image of a Big Mac style burger filled with gherkins instead of burgers!
However, gherkin lovers hopes were dashed when they discovered that sadly for them, it was an April McFool!
2) Domino's Pepperoni Thickshake
Pepperoni and Ice Cream ... delicious! |
McDonalds weren't the only junk food chain to make an April Fools prank this year, with Domino's Pizza also getting in on the action. Domino's also had a new food product, and it sounds absolutely
The new desert from Domino's is the Candied Pepperoni Thickshake ... an ice cream milkshake with pepperoni pieces on top!
I imagine it would taste as minging as it sounds, but fortunately I'll never find out because it was of course another April Fools prank.
3) BMW Lunar Paint
Charge your car at night! |
Proving they're pioneers of eco-friendliness, BMW made an exciting announcement on April 1st regarding an exciting new technology to feature on their electric cars ... BMW Lunar Paint!
To quote the press release:
"BMW Lunar Paint uses revolutionary photovoltaic technology to passively recharge your battery in the hours of darkness, extending your electric range even further."
Of course in reality you can't generate enough electricity from moonlight to power a car. So as cool as it would be if this real, sadly, it is of course totally made-up, and it turned out that BMW were actually pioneers of eco-prankiness.

4) Voice Activated Water Dispensers
Pacific Christian School pranked their students when they installed 'voice activated technology' to their water fountains and towel dispensers.
Voice activated water dispensers |
"Give the item a command and wait a moment for it to respond. If it does not respond, repeat and make sure you are speaking clearly and loudly enough for it to hear. You may have to stand closer. We are still working out the bugs, so if the item is not responding, please report it to the office so it can be addressed."
I've heard variations on this prank on numerous occasions, and I imagine it would be very funny to see someone standing there issuing voice commands in a loud voice not realising it was just a joke. However, sadly, despite the stories, I've never known anyone actually fall for this prank in real life.
Also, it's a Christian school, so it's perhaps worth pointing out that I'm sure one of the ten commandments said something about not bearing false witness. Hmm...

5) Real fake news!
Real news from CNN for April Fools Day. |
Babylon Bee reported that CNN pranked their readers by publishing a real news story for April Fools Day!
According to Babylon Bee, 'the story simply contained a list of facts, with no embellishment, editorializing, or invented details. The story also didn't cite shaky "anonymous sources" and only quoted firsthand witnesses to the event. It was completely factual without any errors whatsoever.'
Fact Check: I've investigated this story by Babylon Bee, and I can confirm that it is of course false. CNN never publish real news articles, not even on April Fools Day!

6) Prankster kid
Here's an April Fools story from reddit:
An empty box, pictured 5 days ago. |
"Yes, did they tell you about it in school?"
"Yes..." *thinking* "Mama, can I have this box?" Grabs the empty Amazon box.
"That's fine." I didn't question it, because she hoards boxes in her room for horse stables, dinosaur houses, you name it.
She comes back from the room, "Mama, can you get me the scissors?"
"Um, sure honey. What do you need them for?"
"I'm going to wrap this empty box and tell daddy it's a gift, and he will open it, and I will say, APRIL FOOLS!"
I find it amusing that even at the age of 4, some kids are already starting to have a sneaky devious mind!
7) April Fool!
Finally, the answer to the question, 'Which of the above April Fools' pranks was actually real?' is of course 'None of them.' I just made that up. April Fool!
To round things off, here's a reminder of one of my favourite quotes on the subject of fooling people:
"It's easier to fool people than to convince them they have been fooled."
A good test to see if this quote applies to you, is to think of an occasion in the last few years when you realised you had jumped to an erroneous conclusion too quickly, but after you then researched the facts more deeply, you then realised your error and reconsidered your opinion.
If you can't think of a single occasion when you did this, then you're very likely one of the fools the quote applies to.
