1) Close enough...
"Three lions on the shirt."
2) A generous offer
Football is a passionate game, but it can also bring out the generous side of people...
3) Football's coming... maybe not.
England's early form in the tournament had many English fans believing that 'football was coming home'. Sadly, that hope came to an end when England were defeated by Croatia in the semi-finals.
4) Always read the small print.
However, we never said when it was coming home.
5) Harsh but true
If Raheem Sterling had shot Tupac, he'd be 47 today.
N.B. For the benefit of any non-football fans, the joke is that Raheem Sterling isn't very good at shooting and therefore he would have missed (allegedly).
6) Famous actor
A famous actor gets his photo taken...

...with Arnold Schwarzenegger.
7) D is for diving, C is for cheat
Neymar has spent so much time diving and rolling around on the floor that someone has created a 'Neymar alphabet' from stills of his diving antics..
8) Let's Kick Common Sense Out Of Football
When Mario Balotelli (then a Manchester City player) was subjected to racist chants by Portuguese side Porto during a Europa League match in February 2012, UEFA handed Porto a fine of £16,500.
When three England players wore the wrong type of socks, FIFA fined them £53,000.
Hmm... #priorities
"Say no to unauthorised socks." |
9) Don't count your chickens...
Sadly, Gareth Southgate's shopping trip proved to be a little premature...
10) A lesson in humility
Finally, here's a World Cup story where the moral of the story is humility.
In Croatia's opening match against Nigeria, Nikola Kalinic refused to come on as a substitute, reportedly because he thought he was too good to be a substitute. The next day he was sent home.
Croatia then went on to make the World Cup final.
Imagine how Kalinic must have felt when he was watching the final sitting at home, knowing that he could have been playing!
