Name fits job

This week on the Charles Fudgemuffin blog I take a look at a few examples where people's names seemed particularly suited to their jobs.

Believe it or not, there is actually a word to describe a name that seems appropriate for its owner, and that word is 'aptronym'. So without further ado, read on to discover a collection of aptronyms!

1) Mr Skidmore the speedway rider

Skidmore by name, skid more by nature.
Hugh Skidmore was a speedway rider who drove for Sheffield Tigers!

Can you imagine the conversation when he first met the manager of Sheffield Tigers?

Sheffield Tigers manager: "Hugh Skidmore?"
Hugh: "No, I'm a very good rider. I hardly skid at all!"

In actual fact, as fans of motorcycle speedway will know, speedway bikes have only one gear and no brakes, so riders do have to slide (or skid) around the corners!

2) Mrs Brewer the brewer

Rosalind Brewer was a former director at Molson Coors Brewing Company.

So she was Brewer by name, brew, er ... director by nature! #SoClose

Howzat!

3) Mr Bowler the cricketer

Peter Bowler was a cricketer who played for Leicestershire, Derbyshire, and Somerset throughout his career.

Despite his name, Peter Bowler was actually primarily a batsman!

4) Cardinal Sin the cardinal

Jaime Sin was the Archbishop of Manilla, but in 1976 he was made a cardinal by the Pope, so he became Cardinal Sin!

Faster than a lightning bolt!

5) Mr Bolt the sprinter

Usain Bolt was a sprinter who certainly lived up to his name, because he was so fast he was like a bolt of lightning!

To illustrate just how fast Mr Bolt was, he's an eight time Olympic gold medalist, eleven time world champion, and holds the current world records for the 100 metres (9.58 seconds) and the 200 metres (19.19 seconds). Impressive!

6) Wright Hassall

Anyone whose ever had any legal issues will know that legal problems can be a right hassle.

So if you're looking for a solicitor or a lawyer, what better solicitors to use than 'Wright Hassall Solicitors'!

7) Mr Chris P Bacon the cook

According to his LinkedIn profile, Chris P Bacon is a cook who works at the Boar's head in Los Angeles!

Chris P Bacon.
Not to be confused with crispy bacon.

So he's Chris P Bacon by name, crispy, er ... cook by nature. #SoClose

8) Postman Pat the postman

Finally, fans of children's TV will remember the popular kid's TV character, Postman Pat! By a bizarre coincidence, Postman Pat was actually a postman!

So he was Postman by name, postman by nature! #NailedIt
