A 'fruit and veg' based higher or lower quiz

In one of my upcoming books which I'm currently writing, one of the characters likes to stay healthy by exercising regularly and growing his own food.*

* More things happen that just that, though. He doesn't spend the entire book just gardening and exercising, obviously. That would be a boring book! Don't worry, there are other more radical plot devepements as well, such as brain transplants and vengeful motivations.

Water melon.
The topic of the first question in this week's quiz.
I often like to use themes from my books as inspiration for blog posts, and this week is no different, as this week's blog post is a true or false quiz for anyone who similarly likes to grow their own fruit and veg.

1) Water content

As you'd expect, water melon contains a lot of water (the clue is in the name), and in fact is made up of 92% water! However, it's not the only fruit and veg which is high in water content. Iceberg lettuce is another food containing a high percentage of water.

But how much water exactly? Does iceberg lettuce contain a higher or lower water percentage than water melon?

Higher or lower?

Radishes.
Highy recommended by an old lady I met in a gardening store once.

2) Fastest to harvest

Keen gardeners may know that radishes are an extremely fast vegetable to grow, and they can be ready to harvest only 25 to 30 days after planting!

But how does that compare to the pawpaw (made famous by Baloo from the Jungle Book)? How long after planting will a pawpaw be ready to harvest? Is it faster than radishes to harvest, or does it take longer?

Faster or slower?

3) Red Hot Chili Peppers

A red hot chili pepper.
I'm fairly new to growing food, so I was surprised to learn that jalapeno chili peppers aren't quite as hot as I imagined. In fact they typically measure between 2,500 to 10,000 on the Scoville scale.*

* A scale used to measure the spiciness of chilis.

However, there are many other less well known chilis of varying degrees of hotness. For example, the Caroline Reaper is another spicy chili pepper.

But how hot is it exactly? Is is hotter than a jalapeno, or is it less spicy?

Spicier or less spicy?

4) Most eaten fruits in the world

Apples are one of the most popular fruits in the world, and in fact 85 million metric tons of apples are consumed every year.

Oranges are another popular fruit, but how do they compare to apples? How many oranges are consumed each year worldwide? Is it more than apples or less than apples?

Higher or lower?

Caution! Don't eat 100 million bananas!

5) Radioactive

Bananas are very very very slightly radioactive, and in actual fact 100,000,000 bananas contain enough radiation to theoretically kill you! (Although I suspect you'd be dead from an exploded stomach long before you chomped on the 100 millionth banana).

However, bananas aren't the only fruit and veg that are very slightly radioactive. Avocados also contain an extremely tiny level of radiation. But how much radiation exactly? Is it more than bananas or less than bananas?

More radiactive or less radiactive?

Happy fruit.

6) Happiness

Finally, let's round things off on a happy note. According to a survey by Gardeners World Magazine, 67% of non-gardeners described themseves as happy.

But how does that happiness level compare to gardeners? Are gardeners in general happier than non-gardeners, or less happy?

Happier or less happy?

Answers:

1) Water content

A photo of water (+/- 4%).

Does iceberg lettuce contain a higher or lower water percentage than water melon?

Higher or lower?

Answer: Higher

Water melon is 92% water, but iceberg lettuce clocks in at an impressive 96% water! So when you eat lettuce, you're only 4% away from eating pure water!*

* Thankfully, some of the 4% is made up of healthy minerals and vitamins.

2) Fastest to harvest

When you pick a pawpaw,
wait seven years.
Is the pawpaw faster to harvest than radishes, or does it take longer?

Faster or slower?

Answer: Slower

In actual fact, the pawpaw takes 5-7 years from planting before the fruit is ready to harvest, so it's slighty slower than a radish!

3) Red Hot Chili Peppers

Hot chilis
Is the Caroline Reaper hotter than a jalapeno, or is it less spicy?

Spicier or less spicy?

Answer: Spicier

Jalapeno chili peppers are relatively mild compared to the Caroline Reaper which typically measures in at a mind-boggling 1.5 million on the Scoville scale, and incredibly in some cases they can even reach as high as 2.2 million on the Scoville scale!

4) Most eaten fruits in the world

Disclaimer: The figures relate to human consumption only,
and don't include apples consumed by hedgehogs.
Are more oranges consumed worldwide each year than apples?

Higher or lower?

Answer: Lower

An impressive 71 million metric tons of oranges are consumed every year! I think you'll agree that's a considerable sum, however, it's not quite as high as the 85 million metric tons of apples which are consumed, so apples win the contest.

5) Radioactive

A safe quantity of bananas.
Are avocados more or less radioactive than bananas?

More radiactive or less radiactive?

Answer: Less radioactive

Bananas contain 3,500 picocuries of radiation per kilogram, whereas avocados contain a mere 2,500 picocuries of radiation per kilogram. So for safety reasons, if you're going to eat some bananas, make sure you don't eat 100 million of them, or you could expose your body to dangerous levels of radiation!

6) Happiness

Gardening makes you happy!
As conclusively proven by the sketch pictured above.
Are gardeners in general happier than non-gardeners, or less happy?

Happier or less happy?

Answer: Happier!

In actual fact, according to the same survey, 87% of gardeners described themseves as happy, so it would seem that gardening can help you be happy! I guess that means it's time for everyone to start growing their own fruit and veg.

How did you do? How many correct answers did you get?

0-1  That's a poor effort. You need to brush up on your fruit and veg knowledge.
2-4  Not bad, but there's room for improvement.
5-6  Great work! You're officially an expert on fruit and veg!
7-11  Wow! That's amazing! However, I'm afraid there were ony six questions, so either you can't count or you've been cheating.
