10 riddles to celebrate National Riddle Day

Yesterday was National Riddle Day (September 3rd), so to belatedly celebrate*, this week the Charles Fudgemuffin blog features a collection of riddles. Some of the following riddles use traditional riddle type logic, but a few of them are a little bit silly.

Riddle me this, riddle me that.
Why is the bottom right question mark, red not black?
* Or alternatively, to prematurely celebrate The Batman villain the Riddler's 73rd birthday (which is next month in October).

1) Parachute riddle

A dead body is found in the middle of a field. There are no tracks leading to or from the body. Their backpack is full. How did they die?

Editor's note: "Charles, you've given the answer away with your title for the first riddle!"
Charles: "Oops, sorry! I'll try to be a bit more careful with the rest of the riddle titles."

Is this a clue, or is it a misleading deception?

2) Wooden riddle

When does a piece of wood feel like a king?

3) Broken riddle

What is so delicate that saying it's name breaks it?

4) Bear riddle

A man walks one mile south. He sees a bear and runs one mile east. He then walks one one mile north and arrives back where he started. What colour was the bear?

A golden door, pictured yesterday.

5) Birthday riddle

What does a boy become on his 11th birthday?

6) Door riddle

A man is driving along and sees three doors, a golden door, a silver door, and a diamond door. Which door does he open first?

7) Murder riddle

A baker, a taxi-driver, a mechanic, and a journalist are playing poker together. The police know that one of them is a murderer, but they only know his name, which is Robert. They don't know what he looks like, and they don't know his profession. The police burst into the room where they are playing poker, and without any form of communication whatsoever, they immediately arrest the journalist and leave. How did they know he was the murderer?

8) Chocolate riddle

What happens to a bar of chocolate when you dip it in very cold water?

9) Final word riddle

What will always prevent you from having the last word?

Iced tea.
Drink at your own peril!

10) Poison riddle

Two girls ate lunch together one day. They both ordered iced tea. One girl drank her iced tea very fast and drank five iced teas in the time that the other girl drank one iced tea. The girl that drank one iced tea died, but the girl who drank five iced teas survived. All of the drinks contained poison.

How did the girl who drank five iced teas survive?

If I was a programming expert, you would be able to hover over each question and the answer to each riddle would magically appear. Sadly, however, I'm not a programming expert. In fact I'm not even a programming amateur! Unfortunately that means if you want to find out the answers, you'll have to scroll down the page...

What a view!

Editor's note: "Charles, that's a paraglider, not a parachute."
Charles: "Surely it's worth sacrificing a little
editorial accuracy to include such an amazing view."

Answers:

1) Parachute Dead body riddle

A dead body is found in the middle of a field. There are no tracks leading to or from the body. Their backpack is full. How did they die?

Their parachute failed to open.

2) Wooden riddle

When does a piece of wood feel like a king?

When it's made into a ruler.

3) Broken riddle

What is so delicate that saying it's name breaks it?

Silence.

Santa and a polar bear at the North Pole.

Please note, this is an artist's impression, rather than a photo, because if
it was a photo then the polar bear would most likely be eating Santa.

4) Bear riddle

A man walks one mile south. He sees a bear and runs one mile east. He then walks one one mile north and arrives back where he started. What colour was the bear?

White. The only place on Earth where he could walk one mile south, one mile east, then one mile north, and end up back where he started, is the North Pole, therefore it must have been a polar bear.

5) Birthday riddle

What does a boy become on his 11th birthday?

11 years old!

6) Door riddle

A man is driving along and sees three doors, a golden door, a silver door, and a diamond door. Which door does he open first?

The car door.

7) Murder riddle

A baker, a taxi-driver, a teacher, and a journalist are playing poker together. The police know that one of them is a murderer, but they only know his name, which is Robert. They don't know what he looks like, and they don't know his profession. The police burst into the room where they are playing poker, and without interviewing any of the poker players, they immediately arrest the journalist and leave. How did they know he was the murderer?

The journalist is the only man. All the other poker players are women.

Two men smashing up a piece of chocolate.
(Photo not to scale.)

8) Chocolate riddle

What happens to a bar of chocolate when you dip it in very cold water?

It gets wet!

9) Final word riddle

What will always prevent you from having the last word?

An echo.

10) Poison riddle

Poison.

Editor's note: "Charles, was the photo caption really necessary?
I'm sure your blog readers can read the label on the bottle of poison."
Charles: "Well, if they can't, then they won't
be able to read the photo caption either!"

Two girls ate lunch together one day. They both ordered iced tea. One girl drank her iced tea very fast and drank five iced teas in the time that the other girl drank one iced tea. The girl that drank one iced tea died, while the girl who drank five iced teas survived. All of the drinks contained poison. How did the girl who drank five iced teas survive?

The poison was in the ice. When the girl drank the iced tea, the ice was still fully frozen. Gradually, as the ice cubes melted the poison was released into the drinks.

However, I would imagine the girl who survived would still have had a bit of a dodgy stomach, though. You would assume that she still drank a little bit of the poison. Just not enough to kill her. I'm not totally sure, though. I'll find out and let you know next week.

On the subject of poison, my collection of crime themed short stories entitled 'How To Poison Your Husband And Get Away With It' is available for kindle from Amazon.

Legal note: After receiving a negative review from a disgruntled matricidal wife on Amazon India, I should perhaps point out that 'How To Poison Your Husband And Get Away With It' is a fiction book featuring fictional stories. It is not a 'How To' guide. (Luckily for that disgruntled reviewer's husband!).

Disgruntled mariticidal reviewers on Amazon India will be pleased to learn that there is nothing misleading about the title to the above blog post. It does exactly what it says on the tin, and features puzzles and riddles.
