Half a million page views!

Last week the Charles Fudgemuffin blog hit an amazing milestone! I've had half a million page views! Wow! And it only took me eight years!

So what better way to celebrate than with one of my favourite subjects to feature on the blog ... a higher or lower quiz!

Farts.
It seems appropriate to stick with the theme of half a million, so for each of the questions see if you can guess if the answer is higher or lower than half a million.

1) Farts

Let's start things off with a serious subject. Farts! How many people in the world fart every second? Is it more than half a million or less than half a million?

Higher or lower?

2) Red blood cells

Without blood cells, we'd be dead. Fortunately though, the human body creates lots of red blood cells every second, but how many exactly?

How many red blood cells does the human body create every second? Is it more than half a million, or less than half a million?

Higher or lower?

3) Origami Space Travel

Reach for the moon ... with folded paper.
Every time you fold a piece of paper in half, its thickness doubles. After around seven folds, the paper becomes too stiff to fold any more, but let's suppose you could theoretically fold the paper in half repeatedly.

How many times would you have to fold a piece of paper in half before it was thick enough to reach to the Moon? Is it more than half a million folds, or less than half a million folds?

Higher or lower?

Tip: The answer may surprise you.

4) The Moon

Sticking with the Moon, this next question should be more straight forward. How many miles is it to the Moon? Is it higher or lower than half a million miles?

Higher or lower?

AAA!

5) Lego

What did the small battery shout after it stepped on a Lego brick? AAA!

We all know that Lego is painful to step on, but that hasn't diminished its popularity. How many Lego sets are sold every day? Is it more than half a million, or less than half a million?

Higher or lower?

6) Santa

Milk and cookies for Santa.
On Christmas Eve, it's traditional to leave Santa a glass of milk and some biscuits/cookies as a thank you for bringing our presents. Not everyone follows this tradition, but if they did, how many calories would Santa consume in one night? Would it be more than half a million, or less than half a million?

Higher or lower?

7) Words

English is a language with more lots and lots of words. In fact there are more words in the English language than any other language in the world.

But how many words are there exactly? Is it more or less than half a million?

Higher or lower?

8) Bitcoin

How much would 10,000 bitcoin be worth today?
Back in 2010, someone called Laszlo bought two large pizzas via an internet forum for 10,000 bitcoin. At the time, one bitcoin was worth $0.0041, so they paid around $41 for their pizzas.

However, the price of bitcoin has since gone up and is now worth significantly more than $0.0041. What would those pizzas have cost based on today's exchange rate? Would it be more than half a million dollars, or less than half a million dollars?

Answers:

Half a million.

1) Farts

How many people in the world fart every second?

Higher or lower?

Higher - 1,247,685 farts every second!

Amazingly, there are approximately 1,247,685 farts every second! It's a wonder the world doesn't stink!

If you'd like to know more, I explained how that figure is calculated in my previous blog post 'Surprising Statistics'.

2) Red blood cells

Red blood cells.
How many red blood cells does the human body create every second?

Higher or lower?

Higher - 17 million red blood cells per second.

Incredibly, the body creates 17 million red blood cells per second! And when the body is stressed that figure can increase to as high as 119 million red blood cells per second!

3) Origami Space Travel

How many times would you have to fold a piece of paper in half before it was thick enough to reach to the Moon?

Higher or lower?

Lower - 42 folds.

It sounds like the answer can't possibly be as low as 42, but I promise you, it's true. If you want to see the evidence, I explain the calculation in my previous blog post on the subject of surprising statistics.

4) The Moon

How many miles is it to the Moon?

Higher or lower?

Lower - 238,855 miles.

On average, the Moon is a distance of 238,855 miles away from Earth. If you were to run a marathan every day, it would take you almost 25 years to reach the Moon! And that's assuming you were able to defy gravity and run in an 'up' direction through space, which very few people* are able to do.

* Zero people, to be precise.

5) Lego

Over half a million Lego sets are sold every day.
How many Lego sets are sold every day?

Higher or lower?

Higher - 604,800 Lego sets are sold every day.

7 Lego sets are sold every second. That works out at 7 x 60 seconds x 60 minutes x 24 hours = 604,800 Lego sets sold every day!

During the Christmas period that number increases even further to over 2 million per day!

6) Santa

If everyone in the world left Santa a glass of milk and some biscuits/cookies on Christmas Eve, how many calories would Santa consume in one night?

Higher or lower?

Higher - Santa would consume 475 billion calories in one night! Wow! No wonder Santa is a little on the large size!

You can check out the calculation in my blog post on Christmas statistics.

7) Words

How many words are there in the English language?

Higher or lower?

Higher - 1,057,379.6 words

In fact there are over a million words in the English language. According to the Language Monitor website, at the time of writing there are 1,057,379.6 words in the English language. I'm not quite sure how you can have 0.6 of a word, but you lea__ something new eve__ day.

8) Bitcoin

Bitcoin for pizza.
If you paid 10,000 bitcoin for two large pizzas, what would be the price of the pizzas based on today's exchange rate?

Higher or lower?

Higher - The pizzas would cost $105 million dollars!

At the time of writing, one bitcoin is worth $10,500 dollars, so 10,000 bitcoin works out at $105,000,000! That works out at $52,500,000 per pizza, or if you cut each pizza into 8 slices, each slice would cost over 6.5 million dollars!

That's expensive pizza! I hope it was good pizza. It wants to be, for that price.
