The weird and wonderful world of Google

It's incredible to think that as recently as 1997, Google didn't even exist! Nowadays pretty much everyone has heard of Google, so this week the Charles Fudgemuffin blog takes a look at the weird and wonderful world of Google!

1) Strange maths

To start things off, here's one question where I'm not convinced that Google is telling the truth...

A surprisingly heavy pound of water!

According to Google, a pound a water weighs 8.36 pounds!

Footnote: I took the above screenshot on 29th July 2019, and sadly since then Google have corrected their search to clarify that it's actually a gallon of water which weighs 8.36 pounds, rather than a pound of water. However, it's very nice of Google to tell me what a gallon water weighs, but that's not what I asked!

2) What does IDK mean?

I asked Google another question, but it wasn't much help...

"Sometimes even Google doesn't know the answer!"

"What does IDK mean?"
"I don't know."

3) "Gurgle, gurgle gurgle."

"Gargle, gargle, gargle."

If you want to hear someone gargling, go to Google Translate, and type:

"eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee"

...then translate from English to Icelandic, and click the listen icon to hear the sound of someone gargling.

If you're feeling lazy, then here's a link I prepared earlier:

https://translate.google.com/#view=home&op=translate&sl=en&tl=is&text=eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

4) "Where did I leave my keys?"

One of the cool things about Google is that it's self learning, so over time as people search for things, Google learns what you are likely to be searching for and makes predictions as you type.

However, this next predictive example highlights that there are some very foolish people in the world who don't quite understand the limitations of Google...

Google knows everything, apparently, judging by some people's searches.

If we ever get to the stage where Google knows where you've left your keys and your wallet, then at that stage we need to start worrying!

5) Making your mark

Finally, here's a screenshot from someone who hasn't quite grasped how to use Google...

"Does marker come off a laptop screen?"
