Isn't it ironic? (part 4)

The other day my friend told me I don't know what ironic means, which was ironic because we were at the beach at the time.

Editor: "Charles, then I suspect your friend was right, because irony has nothing to do with the beach."
Charles: "Yes, I know. I was just being ironic."

Anyway, it's National Irony Day today (October 12th, for the benefit of anyone who is reading this blog post in the future), so this week the Charles Fudgemuffin blog features another round-up of ironic photos, comments and observations.

1) Ironic statue

To start things off, here's a statue to celebrate freedom, locked behind a chain fence.

"They may take our lives, but they'll never take ... the keys to our chained fence!"

2) Ironic purpose

When an eyelash gets stuck in your eye, it's causing the exact problem it was designed to prevent. In fact you could say it's eyeronic!

3) Ironic price

The book 'The Best Things In Life Are Free' is available from the Lonely Planet website priced at £16.99!

In all seriousness, there are a lot of cool things in the world to see for free, so as well as being ironic, Lonely Planet are also correct.

4) Ironic name

Why are slippers called slippers, when the whole point of wearing them is so you don't slip?

Caution: Don't electrocute yourself!

5) Ironic death

Michael Godwin was a murderer who was sentenced to the electric chair. He then got a reprieve when his death sentence was reduced to life imprisonment.

However, his reprieve proved temporary when he then accidentally electrocuted himself to death while trying to fix his headphones.

How ironic!

Editor: "Charles, I suspect the official explanation for his death may not be entirely accurate."
Charles: "Yes, I know, but that's not as ironic, so for the purposes of this blog post I'm pretending I believe the official explanation."

6) Ironic steaks

'Rare' is a very common way to eat steak.

'Well done' is considered by chefs* to be a poor way to have your steak cooked.

* And food snobs.

7) Ironic sign

Please do not waste ink. For example, by printing a message on a black background.

They may have been a hypocrite, but at least they were polite and remembered to say please.

8) Ironic eye test

What's ironic about being late to your optometrist appointment?

They can't see you.

9) Ironic Smile

Harvey Ball was the creator of the smiley face. Here he is pictured with his iconic smiley design.

Presumably his smiley wasn't based on a self-portrait.

To be fair, aparently he was only paid $45 for the design, so I can understand why he looks a bit miserable. Maybe he should read Lonely Planet's 'The Best Things In Life Are Free' guide book!
