Murray Walker quotes (part 3)

A new formula 1 season starts this weekend as the teams and drivers head to Bahrain for the opening Grand Prix of the year. So to celebrate, this week the Charles Fudgemuffin blog rounds up a few more memorable quotes from legendary formula 1 commentator Murray Walker...

A formula 1 car, pictured decades ago.
1) "And there's a dry line appearing in the tunnel. Obvious really as it has a roof."

2) "And the first five places are filled by five different cars."

3) "That's the first time he had started from the front row in a Grand Prix, having done so in Canada earlier this year."

4) "Excuse me while I interrupt myself."

"Wow! You're right, Murray! About the
sky, I mean. Not about lap 26 being halfway."

5) "It's lap 26 of 58, which unless I'm very much mistaken is halfway."

6)  "Look up there! That's the sky!"

7) "That is Martin Brundle, helmet off. He's got a bald patch. I don't think he'll like that."

8) "Jenson Button is in the top ten, in eleventh position."

9) "And the first three cars are all Escorts, which isn't surprising as this is an all Escort race."

Descartes: "The wall doesn't think, therefore it isn't."

9.86) "He is exactly 10 seconds ahead, or more approximately, 9.86 seconds."

11) "How you can crash into a wall without it being there in the first place is beyond me!"

12) "Jean Alesi is 4th and 5th."

13) "Tambay's hopes, which were nil before, are absolutely zero now."

"Hmm, I can't seem to find New Zealand..."

14) "And there's no damage to the car except to the car itself."

15) "The European drivers have adapted to this circuit extremely quickly, especially Paul Radisich who's a New Zealander."

If you're a formula 1 fan then some of Murray's 'Murrayisms' actually do make sense. For example, when Murray said, "The first five places are filled by five different cars," he obviously meant five cars from five different constructors. Even if you're not a formula 1 fan though, Murray Walker was still a legend and as well as being famous for making the occasional gaffe, he was my - and I'm sure many other fans' - favourite sports commentator of all-time.
