Misleading thumbnails

This week's blog post is based on a theme which no doubt readers will have come across on many occasions. It's a quiz based on misleading thumbnails!

A clue to the theme of this week's blog post.
In fact I would imagine you've probably read so many quizzes about misleading thumbnails that you're probably quite sick of them by now. However, if by any chance you aren't yet sick of misleading thumbnail quizzes yet, then you're in luck! Because there's another such quiz below.

All you have to do is take a look at the thumbnails below and guess whether the description is true or false. If you think it's false, you can also earn an extra bonus point if you can work out what the photo really is.

And there's no cheating by zooming in! Remember, the FBI are secretly monitoring everything you do, so they'll be able to tell if you're cheating.

Anyway, without further ado, let's get straight on with the quiz.

1) Scary spider

Anyone of a squeamish disposition should look away now! That's because the first thumbnail is a photo of a scary spider! I'm no arachnologist, so I'm not sure what type of spider it is exactly, but whatever variety it is, it certainly looks deadly!

But is it really a scary spider, or could it perhaps just be a deceptively misleading thumbnail?

True or false?

2) Dog lying in the snow

Next up is something far more pleasant. It's a cute dog lying in the snow! I'm surprised it's not cold, but I suppose dogs do have fur to keep them warm.

But is the real reason why the dog isn't cold because it's not really a dog and it's in fact something else instead?

True or false?

3) Cute baby duckling

The next thumbnail is yet another animal themed photo. It's a cute baby duckling with a big bulging eye!

But is it really a cute baby duckling, or could it perhaps be something entirely different?

True or false?

4) Futuristic city with lots of skyscrapers

I prefer small villages to large cities, but if you're the type of person that likes big cities, then good news! This next thumbnail should be right up your street, because it's a photo of a futuristic city skyline with lots of skyscrapers.

But is it really a futuristic city with lots of skyscrapers, or is it something else which just looks deceptively like a futuristic city when it's shrunk down to thumbnail size? Or perhaps it is a futuristic city, but with just a few skyscrapers, rather than lots of them.

True or false?

5) Fried chicken on a drip tray

Here's one for any lovers of fried food. It's fried chicken on a drip tray.

But is it really a delicious tasty treat, or could it be another deceptively misleading thumbnail?

True or false?

6) Hands holding moss wearing googly eyes

To round things off, here's a common photo which is no doubt a very familiar sight to most people. It's a photo of a pair of hands holding a pile of moss wearing a pair of googly eyes.

But could that perhaps just be a deceptive bluff, and could the photo maybe actually show something else instead?

True or false?

Scroll down the page to see the full size photos and find out which thumbnail descriptions were truthful, and which were deceptively misleading thumbnails...

Answers:

Only one of the thumbnail descriptions was accurate, meaning the other five were false. And remember, if you guessed what the misleading thumbnails were actually of, then you get a bonus point for each correct guess!

Editor's note: "Charles, are you sure we can afford all these bonus points you keep giving away?"
Charles: "Relax, I bought a load of bonus points in bulk, so I got a good deal."

Anyway, here are the full size photos.

1) Scary spider: False

It was actually a group* of lemurs eating a tasty snack. Observant readers will have spotted the clue in the number of legs/tails. There were nine tails, and of course spiders only have eight legs.

* Or rather, a conspiracy of lemurs, which apparently is the correct word for a group of lemurs. However, after seeing this photo, perhaps a group of lemurs should be known as a tarantula of lemurs.

2) Dog lying in the snow: False

"Who's a good mountain?"

A dog lying in the snow would have been cool (literally), but sadly it's not a dog. It's a very large mountainous rock formation. If you're not convinced and you want further proof, then you can just make out a man in front of the dog shaped mountain, so if it was a dog, it would be an extremely large dog!

3) Cute baby duckling: False

As you can see, it's not a cute baby duckling after all. It's actually someone pouring pumpkin beer down the sink. Apparently, that's the best place for it according to whoever took this photo.

4) Futuristic city with lots of skyscrapers: False

This was yet another misleading thumbnail. The 'skyscrapers' in the 'futuristic city' were actually screws and bolts.

5) Fried chicken on a drip tray: False

Sadly, it's not fried chicken, but it's something even better! It was actually a group of dogs* standing above some sort of drain.

* Maybe a group of dogs should be known as a fried chicken of dogs.

6) Hands holding moss wearing googly eyes: True

This was the only accurate thumbnail description. It was indeed a pair of hands holding a pile of moss wearing a pair of google eyes. I'm not sure why they were holding a pile of moss wearing a pair of googly eyes, but whatever their reason, that's irrelevant to the quiz.
