Christmas 'higher or lower' quiz (part 2)

One of my previous blog posts which is quite popular (even during the summer, bizarrely) is my Christmas 'higher or lower' quiz. So to cater to market forces, here's another Christmas themed quiz featuring another batch of 'higher or lower' conundrums...

"Should my hat be higher or lower?"

1) Battle of the sexes

To start things off, here's a straight forward question. Who spends more on Christmas shopping; men or women?

A) Men
B) Women

Men or women?

2) Real versus fake

Next up here's a question which I found a little tricky. Fake plastic Christmas trees have become increasingly popular over the years, but are they as popular as real Christmas trees? In the year 2017, which sold the most in the US; fake plastic Christmas trees, or real Christmas trees?

A) Fake plastic Christmas trees
B) Real Christmas trees

Fake plastic Christmas trees or real Christmas trees?

3) Christmas presents

Christmas gifts,
pictured yesterday.

Some people can be quite tricky to buy for, while others (such as young kids) are fairly straight forward, but as a percentage, what type of presents are bought by most Christmas shoppers; jewellery, toys, health and beauty items, or sports goods?

A) Jewellery
B) Toys
C) Health and beauty items
D) Sports goods

Jewellery, toys, health and beauty items, or sports goods?

4) Tree versus dinosaur

Two diplodocuses,
pictured several million years ago.

Most Christmas trees can fit inside a regular home, but they can of course grow considerably larger than the height of a standard room. But just how big can Christmas trees grow?

Specifically, how does the size of the largest Christmas tree ever recorded compare with the size of a diplodocus? Which is the biggest; the height of the largest Christmas tree recorded, or the length of a diplodocus?

A) Largest Christmas tree
B) Diplodocus

Largest Christmas tree or diplodocus?

5) Internet versus real life

The internet has become an increasingly popular way to buy presents in recent years, but is it more popular than buying things in real life? Which purchasing method accounts for the greatest percentage of Christmas sales; the internet or real life?

A) Internet buying
B) Real life buying

Internet or real life?

6) New year's resolutions

Finally, this last statistic is actually more related to New Year rather than Christmas, but I'm feeling in a rebellious mood, so I'm going to include it anyway! Which new year's resolution is more popular; to read more books, or to quit smoking?

A) Read more books
B) Quit smoking

Read more books or quit smoking?

Answers:

1) Battle of the sexes

"Men spend more than women!?
Neigh chance!"
Who spends more on Christmas shopping; men or women?

A) Men = $725/£410 - Most
B) Women = $609/£373

Men or women?

It's close, but it turns out that men spend slightly more than women. In the US men spend a average of $725 versus $609 spent on average by women. In the UK the figures are £410 for men and £373 for women.

This rabbit prefers real Christmas trees.

2) Real versus fake

In the year 2017, which sold the most in the US; fake plastic Christmas trees, or real Christmas trees?

A) Fake plastic Christmas trees = 21.1 million
B) Real Christmas trees = 27.4 million - Most sold

In 2017 in the US, 27.4 million real Christmas trees were sold versus 21.1 fake Christmas trees, so real Christmas trees are still the champions of the tree wars.

3) Christmas presents

What type of presents are bought by most Christmas shoppers; toys, jewellery, health and beauty items, or sports goods?

As everybody knows,
all presents actually come from Santa!
A) Jewellery = 21%
B) Toys = 42% - Most bought
C) Health and beauty items = 25%
D) Sports goods = 17%

As you might have guessed, toys are the most frequently bought item from the list of categories above.

4) Tree versus dinosaur

Which is the biggest; the height of the largest Christmas tree recorded, or the length of a diplodocus?

A) Largest Christmas tree = 221 foot - Biggest
B) Diplodocus = 105 foot

According to the Guinness Book Of Records, the tallest Christmas tree ever cut was displayed at the Northgate Shopping Center in Seattle in 1950, and was 221 feet high!

To confuse things, in actual fact there are different varieties of diplodocus. However, none of them are as big as the largest Christmas tree! A complete fossil of diplodocus carnegii measures in at a mere 79 feet, and even the enormous diplodocus hallorum only measures in at an estimated 105 feet, making Christmas trees the clear winner in this round!

"Drat! Beaten by real life!"

5) Internet versus real life

Which purchasing method accounts for the greatest percentage of Christmas sales; the internet or real life?

A) Internet buying = 46%
B) Real life buying = 54%
- Highest

It's close, but as a percentage, people still prefer to buy the majority of their Christmas presents in real life from real shops!

6) New year's resolutions

Which new year's resolution is more popular; to read more books, or to quit smoking?

A) Read more books = 23% - More popular
B) Quit smoking = 16%

I guess the relatively low figure for giving up smoking can perhaps be explained by the fact that nowadays a lot of people have already given up smoking.
